Recipe: Mazagran

This is an Algerian classic and now it’s ridiculously easy to make at home using the trusty AeroPress. It’s an excellent drink for summer (which seems like a lifetime away given that it’s currently the back end of January).

Traditionally Mazagran is prepared with strong, hot coffee mixed with lemon juice and sugar that is poured over ice, and it is typically served in a narrow, tall glass but when the crazy Portuguese got hold of the idea they threw some rum in to liven up the party so you can either have the traditional Algerian version without rum or go Portuguese and get pissed.

Ingredients
Ground coffee
Ice cubes
Juice of 1 lemon
3 Tablespoons of sugar

Equipment
AeroPress
Spoon for mixing

Method
Use the inverted method to brew one cup of AeroPress coffee using your choice of ground beans, I’d recommend something on the stronger side.

Mix the sugar into your fresh, hot coffee then stir to dissolve the sugar.

Add some ice cubes to a tall glass followed by your coffee/sugar mixture.

Top off with fresh lemon juice and stir

You may wish to add more or less sugar/lemon juice to taste
