Recipe: The REAL Pumpkin Spice Latte

Common white girls and Starbucks addicts rejoice! Using the following recipe you can make your own pumpkin spice latte at home! I’ve been playing about and I think I’ve just about got it right.

Whilst Starbucks will just make you a bog-standard latte and chuck a load of pumpkin spice syrup in, this is the real deal and uses actual pumpkin and actual spices to make a drink that will warm up any winter day.

For the spice mixture:

  • 235ml water
  • 3 tbsp cup maple syrup
  • 2 tbsp pumpkin puree – can be bought in most supermarkets
  • Heaped 1/2 tsp each: cinnamon, cloves, ginger, nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • ¼ tsp allspice

For the steamed milk:

  • 1.5 tsp vanilla bean paste (or vanilla extract)
  • 120ml milk


  • Espresso machine with steam wand
  • Milk pitcher
  • Saucepan
  • Measuring beaker
  • Wooden spoon


In a saucepan over medium heat, combine pumpkin puree and spices. Heat until fragrant while stirring constantly. Add water and maple syrup and bring to a simmer. Reduce to a syrup consistency.

Mix together the vanilla and milk in pitcher you’ll use for steaming. Steam the mix to your desired consistency

Combine double shot of espresso with an equal amount of your pumpkin flavouring, stir to combine. Pour vanilla milk over espresso the two as you normally would. Garnish with cinnamon if you live life on the edge.
