Forget your Costa Coffee Chai Latte, this is a coffee addict’s take on the humble chai tea. My recipe uses ground spices however these can be a bit pricy so you may want to use chai tea bags instead – these can be bought in most supermarkets now.
For the spice mixture:
- 2 1/2 Tbsp ground cinnamon
- 2 Tbsp ground cardamom
- 1 1/2 Tbsp ground cloves
- 1 Tbsp ground coriander
- 1 Tbsp ground ginger
- 1 tsp ground black pepper
Coarsely ground coffee in a 1:16 coffee to water ratio
- Grinder (if not using reground coffee and spices)
- Timer – optional
- Scale – optional
There isn’t really a recipe as much for this. Just make your coffee in a cafetière as you normally do, but add 1 tsp of the chai spice mixture to the ground coffee for each cup of coffee you’re making or the contents of one chai tea bag per 2 cups.
If you’re making around 6 cups or more then add enough spice as you see fit for your personal taste preference. With large volumes 1 tsp of spice per cup may become overpowering.
If you are using tea bags then use the contents of 1 bag per 2 cups of coffee so for an 8 cup cafetière you would need 4 tea bags.
Leave the coffee and spices to brew for 4 minutes.
